COFFEE STORY - AA GONDO

Gondo is one of three wet mills operated by the New Kiriti Farmers Cooperative Society, which supports nearly 2,500 smallholder farmers—727 of whom deliver their coffee to Gondo. Established in 1998, the society plays a central role in the coffee sector of Murang’a County. Each year, Gondo processes between 168,000 and 475,000 kilograms of coffee cherry grown on small farms averaging just half an acre. The trees thrive in deep red volcanic soils, where consistent rainfall and mild temperatures create ideal conditions for producing high-quality coffee.

AT THE FARM

At Gondo, ripe cherries are handpicked and carefully sorted before being pulped and fermented for 16–18 hours. The coffee is then washed, graded, and dried slowly in the sun. Clean water from the Kananahu stream is reused through recirculation systems to reduce environmental impact. Once dried to parchment, the coffee is transferred to a dry mill for final processing and marketing by Sustainable Management Services Ltd., resulting in a clean, traceable, fully washed AA coffee.
